By the way, what study programs can my child choose at HEC Liège?
Upon entering the first year of the Bachelor's program, your child must choose between a Bachelor in Economics and Management and a Bachelor in Business Engineering.
Many courses are identical in both programs. However, the Business Engineering program includes:
- More quantitative methods
- A significant emphasis on information technology
- A particular focus on analytical reasoning
- An important technological dimension
- The fundamentals of sciences and the interactions between science, technology, and industrial innovation... which are reflected in the first years through science courses (chemistry, physics, etc.) in the curriculum.
In a company, the business engineer will be involved in both management and technology. They will act as an interface between these two areas. Learning science is, therefore, an indispensable asset. It fosters open-mindedness, sharpens critical and analytical thinking, and equips business engineers with the necessary tools to interact with the technological sector of the company.
There are no formal prerequisites. It is not necessary to have followed a strong science track in secondary school to choose the Business Engineering program. An open mind and a certain interest in science are required.
What's the difference between Economics and Management?
At the Bachelor's level, the training is common. Economics and Management are very complementary disciplines that use the same tools, share many careers, and both contribute to the evolution of companies and society in general. Both disciplines require a desire to understand the functioning of companies, markets, and the global economy.
However, they can be differentiated by certain specificities:
- In management, the study of legal, societal, and human aspects is prioritized. The manager will primarily move towards major functions of the company such as corporate finance, human resources management, marketing, law, entrepreneurship, etc.
- In economics, questions such as "Is economic growth harmful to the environment?" or "Does globalization worsen global poverty?" are explored. If these topics interest you and you wish to provide in-depth answers, then studies in economics are for you.
Two different approaches, but often using the same tools to tackle the same reality.
And at the Master's level?
Specialized in several finalities, the Master's programs provide training that combines transversal academic skills necessary for a successful career in academia, business, or professional organizations.
The objective of the Master's training is to acquire a solid foundation of conceptual knowledge that can be quickly transformed into operational skills.
