Math and Languages
Let's turn now to two questions that I'm sure your children are asking themselves and that, as parents, you may also be concerned about:
How many hours of math in secondary school are necessary to succeed at HEC Liège? What linguistic pathway does HEC Liège offer?
Math
First, let's talk about math. There are no formal prerequisites required. A minimum of 4 hours of math per week is recommended by HEC's mathematics professors for the Bachelor's in Economic and Management Sciences. However, motivation and regular work are as important as the previous curriculum. Many students in Economic and Management Sciences who followed a 4-hour math course in their secondary studies succeed without any particular problems.
It is true, however, that students who have taken 6 or 8 hours of math have more time to devote to other courses. Likewise, those who have had 4 hours of math may find languages or economics easier.
Our math requirements are relatively high (more than in psychology or sociology, but less than in a Bachelor's in math or applied sciences). However, during the first year at HEC, students review all the material (except geometry) seen during their six years of secondary school, which can help some get up to speed.
So, motivation and regular work from the first days of the academic year are key!
Languages
Next, let's discuss languages. Two foreign languages are on the program from the first year of the Bachelor's: Business English (6 credits, or 3 hours/week), mandatory for all (students are divided into groups), and a second foreign language, to be chosen from Dutch, German, Spanish, and Italian. Your child will continue this second foreign language throughout their studies.
In the Master's program, there are no English courses, but all courses are taught in English. Your child can also start a third language if they wish (Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian, or Chinese).

In the bachelor's program, languages account for 18% of courses!
The number of credits allocated to language courses in the bachelor's program is the highest in French-speaking Belgium.
An Erasmus stay and/or an internship abroad also give your child the opportunity for immersion in a language of their choice.
